At TVW, we’ve been harnessing the wonderful properties of oak for decades.  As master oak frame builders, our work has been reflected in a variety of structures including homes, barns and garages.

Oak is astonishingly versatile. It is rustic and yet contemporary, and TVW’s architectural designers will show you how you can combine a traditionally jointed and pegged timber frame with all the technologies of a modern home.

We love working with our clients to create bespoke oak frame homes, and to bring their projects to fruition in the form of a beautiful oak frame construction. Oak charms your senses: its warmth, beauty, texture and scent will give your home cosy character. Along with the foundations, the structure of your building is fundamental to its longevity. We also keep a firm eye on build costs, finding experienced and clever ways to deliver your goals, on budget, on spec and on time.

The process starts with our architectural designers. They can work with your own concept, or create designs to inspire you. Drawing on years of experience, our designs not only look good on paper, but work in practice. Indeed, every one of our designs are created to make your oak frame construction build easier, quicker and more cost-effective. We work with you as a team, starting with your vision and taking it through to a structural reality.

At TVW, we design and construct traditional bespoke oak frames for houses of every size and style, from small to large, from classical to ultra-contemporary. And because every home is different, we treat every project with the individuality it deserves.

Oak Framed Extensions

Moving house to gain more space has never been more expensive. Yet an oak-frame extension can breathe new life into your existing home, giving you not only the additional room you seek but with a character and charm like no other.

At TVW we design and install oak frame extensions that have given owners:

  • larger kitchens with farmhouse-style beams.
  • warm, welcoming spare bedrooms
  • home offices with an inspirational ambience you won’t find in traditional workspaces
  • enclosures for a swimming pool or leisure extension
  • comfy open plan family rooms with glazing to link indoors and outdoors

With our expertise, your oak-framed extension flows seamlessly from your current home, with originality and style.

If you yearn for more living space with plenty of natural daylight, the answer could be an orangery. As its name suggests, orangeries were first created for the purpose of growing citrus trees. In the 17th century orangeries started to become fashionable and decorative constructions. Today, their role is simply to provide fabulous, year-round living space. Oak frame orangeries could have been invented for the British and the British climate. These bright, airy environments are a half-way house between being bathed in natural daylight, and providing snug protection from rain and wintry days. The seasons can do what they will; inside, you can sit ‘in’ your garden, snug and enclosed in even the deepest of winters. With the latest generation of underfloor heating and glazing technology, your conservatory will be cosily warm in winter yet cool and fresh in summer.

At TVW, we believe sympathetic design is crucial, so that your conservatory respects and reflects the architectural character of your home. At The Village Workshop, our design team creates oak framed conservatories that are an organic extension of your home; a natural and free flowing space connecting your interior living rooms with your garden. TVW designs oak frames for orangeries that simply make a lovely addition to any home, ranging from a classic period style that complements fine older houses, to ultra-contemporary creations.

The options are endless with oak frame barn conversions: whether spacious family homes, or communal halls, or home offices, or free-form spaces with guest accommodation up in the roof space. And whether they’re an extension to your home or free-standing, we never lose sight of the need to complement the essential character of the existing property. Our team is also equally comfortable working with cherished listed structures as we are with new constructions from the ground up.

This is TVW’s heartland, where we employ all our traditional skills and methods. These include classic mortice-and-tenon joints, locked together with hand-made oak pegs. We can also use wide-curved braces and oak cladding for a result that’s both beautiful and practical.

From many years’ experience, the TVW team knows the dimensions, layout and functionality needed to accommodate and care for these prize possessions. These oak framed outbuildings are similar in construction to our garage frames, but typically with extra width and depth, and often with the addition of a veranda for extra cover.

We also supply all the fittings and fixings to make the project complete: from galvanised frame stable doors with chew strips and tack room doors, to barn doors for the hay store and any customised requirements you may have.

The Village Workshop applies the same standards and care to oak-framed garages and outbuildings as we do to any other. This also means we can create structures that go beyond simply a dry place to park a car. Perhaps you’d also like a snug office room, workshop, usable accommodation or storage space over two storeys?

Our team can create a building that is both functional and beautiful, making full use of options such as partitioned bays, personnel doors, automated garage doors, windows, Velux windows, staircases, insulation and panelling. We can even add a useful log store or ‘bin tidy’ to the majority of our oak framed garage and outbuilding designs.

At The Village Workshop we have a full range of garage styles from single storey one to four bay oak garages to two-storey structures that can include additional accommodation or storage.
